Independent Caregiver
An individual who provides home health care or hospice services and:
1. Who holds an active state licensure or certificate appropriate to the level of care being provided
and works independent of a licensed Home Health Care Agency. The license or certification must be in the
state where care will be provided; or
2. Is an individual who has been chosen by You and has been qualified under the Independent Caregiver
Certification Benefit; or
3. Is an individual providing a level of service that does not require certification or licensure.
An Independent Caregiver cannot be a member of your immediate family living with you.
Inflation Protection with the Automatic Increase Benefit Rider - AIB
A rider designed to help you keep pace to some extent with the potential of cost of care inflation.
The rider increases your maximum daily benefit either on a simple or compound basis, depending on the
rider you select.
Informal Caregiver
The person who has the primary responsibility of caring for you in your home. An Informal Caregiver
cannot be a person who is paid for caring for you.
Instrumental Activities of Daily Living
IADLs assess the level of cognitive as well as physical impairment and include such activities as:
shopping, using the telephone, housekeeping, doing laundry, taking medications, and managing finances.
Intermediate Nursing Care
is similar to skilled care, except the patient does not receive or need 24-Hour attention. Thus,
intermediate nursing care is skilled care provided on a non-continuous basis.
